Brabus takes on Mercedes GL63 with Widestar kit

Mon, 03 Jun 2013

Brabus added the Mercedes GL63 AMG to its Widestar lineup on Monday. In addition to the wild body kit, Brabus adds 70 hp to the mix and a handful of twist at the wheels to create the B63-620 Widestar.

The visual upgrades begin with the fender flares that add 3 inches to the width of the already-big SUV. Air inlets in front scoop more oxygen and give the Mercedes GL a more aggressive look. Brabus says the new front clip also reduces lift at speed, but we think you'd have to be going pretty fast to actually experience it. In the back a roof spoiler is added along with a diffuser and new cutouts for the sports exhaust.

Next, Brabus adds 23x11-inch forged alloy wheels. Three choices are offered and the company says they save 15 percent over the weight of cast wheels. Street tires are also supplied from Continental, Pirelli or Yokohama. Alternately, 21- and 22-inch wheels can also be specified.

A new control module for the air suspension on the GL lowers the vehicles about an inch, while six-piston calipers and vented brake discs can also be added.

No Brabus kit would come without a power upgrade. This one uses the company's PowerXtra control module to remap the injection and ignition, and raise the boost pressure. Output jumps to 620 hp and torque grows to 604 lb-ft. The sprint to 62 mph goes down a tick to 4.7 seconds, while top speed remains at a limited 174 mph.

A sport exhaust system features two modes and a butterfly valve. Drivers can either let the sound out or flip the switch to the “coming home” mode for some peace and civility.

Buyers can match the Brabus outerwear with interior upgrades including stainless steel scuff plates, Brabus leather and Alcantara, company logos and a few other options. The car at the Geneva motor show sported yacht-like wood appointments that dovetailed together like a ship's bow. A Brabus speedo, pedals, door pins and aluminum shift paddles can also be added.

The “base” GL63 will set you back $116,925. The Brabus upgrades will add a significant amount on to that. We sent them a note regarding pricing; we'll update you as soon as they get back to us.
