Brief 5 – Sculpting: CDN–GM Interactive Design Competition
Fri, 15 Aug 2014The Car Design News and General Motors Interactive Design Competition is now open. It offers you the choice of five briefs, each set by GM's design teams, and entries are invited at http://www.cardesigncontest.com/
Sculpting, the fifth and final brief, is new for this year's running of the design competition. The challenge is to explore automotive sculpting; the fundamental principles of line, form, proportion and scale.
Using either digital or physical modeling tools available, from Alias to Z Brush, or modeling clay, foam or wood, our judges are looking for you to utilize the pillars of GM's brands to influence your form vocabulary:
Buick – Understated luxury; modern comfort Cadillac – Art and science Chevrolet – Find new roads GMC – Professional grade; industrial sculptureAlternatively, the judges ask you to select one of the following design attributes:
Capability – the roughest roads; the worst conditions Efficiency – reduce your environmental footprint Responsiveness – evoke easy maneuverability Speed – make your form a racerThe judges ask that you focus on the story you wish to tell through your model; support your work with sketches, demonstrations of surface quality and inspirational imagery; but ultimately deliver a visually stunning form that celebrates the beauty of the automobile.
The best work will be singled out by GM and CDN judges, with the top designers being rewarded with one of six, three-month paid internships offering the chance to work alongside GM's designers at the world-famous Tech Center in Warren, MI.
The contest is open to full-time design students of all disciplines, in a college or university in the USA or Canada and who have at least one more semester to complete after the 2015 summer internship ends. Winners will be announced at the NAIAS in Detroit, in January 2015.
The initial ideation phase of the competition ends on 22 August, so head to http://www.cardesigncontest.com/ to enter.
