British Grand Prix (2012) RESULT
Sun, 08 Jul 2012With Alonso on pole, two Red Bulls and Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes jus behind and rain likely, Silverstone 2012 could be interesting.
Qualifying for the 2012 British Grand Prix was a shambles with more rain than the average July sees all month.
But through it all there were some great drives, not least of which was Alonso putting his Ferrari on pole, Webber taking second in his adopted home Grand Prix and the King of the rain – Michael Schumacher – in third.
From the lights Alonso took the lead in to theĀ firstĀ corner, a lead he maintained comfortably for most of the race, despite Webber pushing hard.
But in the closing laps Webber started to pressurise Alonso and managed to power by on lap 48 and consolidate the lead in to a three second win over Alonso with his team mate, Sebastian Vettel taking third.
Behind Vettel came Massa – a good finish from the Ferrari number two – and Kimmi Raikkonen in the Lotus with Romain Grosjean putting in an impressive drive – he stopped for a new wing on lap five and came our dead last – to take a second points finish for Lotus.
The remainder of the top ten was taken up by Michael Schumacher in the Mercedes in seventh ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, Bruno Senna in ninth and Button in tenth.
We’d expected rain to make Silverstone a lively race, but even without the rain there was plenty of action and some impressive stuff – especially from Webber who closed the gap on championship leader Alonso by seven points.
But it was a disappointing day for McLaren and Paul di Resta had a torrid time after contact with Grosjean on the opening lap and a retirement on lap four.
