This year’s Formula One season is starting to turn in to a cross between a Roy of the Rovers special and a Disney Fairytale. Not content with simply getting the Brawn GP team up and running just in time for the start of the season, and then going on to win four of the first five Grand Prix of the year, Button and Barichello have crowned all those achievements for Brawn GP by winning in spectacular one-two style at the F1 ‘Jewel in the Crown’ event in Monaco.
Button got off to a great start in qualifying by grabbing pole in the closing minutes of Q3 qualifying to join Raikkonen on the front row of the grid, with Barrichello riding shotgun for Button on the second row. And he maintained that position from start to finish, despite a slightly dodgy patch on the second set of tyres early on. Barrichello grabbed second place from Raikkonen at the second corner, and that’s the way it stayed throughout the race.
Despite the weekend being dominated by Brawn, Ferrari managed something of a recovery, with Raikkoneon coming in behind Barrichello in third and Massa fourth to give Ferrari their best haul of points this season – 11.
But this looks like it’s turning in to a fait accompli for Brawn. Whatever the track, and whatever the opposition throws at them, Button, Barrichello and Brawn seem to have the answer.
This was a flawless race by Button – only his second points-scoring finish at Monaco – and confirms what we were already beginning to suspect – the Button is, after all, a Champion in waiting.
But Button isn’t perfect. He managed to park his car in Parc Ferme by mistake and ended up having to jog back to the winners podium, effectively doing a half-lap, on-foot victory parade!
