Canadian Grand Prix (2012) RESULT
Mon, 11 Jun 2012A Red Bull on pole with Sebastian Vettel and a McLaren alongside with Lewis Hamilton. Will we get the seventh winner of 2012 in Montreal?
The 2012 Canadian Grand Prix at the Giles Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal looked a bit like 2011 at the front, with Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull on pole. Although we didn’t get the torrential rain we saw in 2011 or a rampant Jenson Button scything through the field.
Instead, we got a resurgent Lewis Hamilton devouring the field to take his first win of 2012 – and the seventh winner in seven races – after a stunning push after his second pit stop to blast Ferrari’s Alonso and Red Bull’s Vettel out fo the running.
Not only did Hamilton push Vettel and Alonso in to the also-rans in fourth and fifth, Grosjean brought his Lotus home in second place and Mexican Sergio Perez put Sauber on the podium in third place.
Astonishingly, there was no safety car at Montreal and no torrential rain, just a race won by Hamilton on a mission. Much of the race was a battle of three world champions – Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso – all taking turns in the lead.
But after the second pit stop for Hamilton, McLaren urged him to go for gold as the tyres of Vettel and Alonso faded and he did exactly as urged. Sadly, Button’s poor form continued with a 16th place finish but it was McLaren’s day.
Mark Webber in the second Red Bull came in seventh just behind Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes, with Kimi Raikkonen taking eighth in his Lotus and Kobayashi was ninth for Sauber. The last points place went to Massa’s Ferrari.
