Just to prove it really does take all sorts, you can in fact actually buy a Car Mechanic Simulator computer game. Which is out now as the 2014 version, no less.

Fixing a real car when it breaks down is tiresome enough for most of us – choosing to repair one virtually in our own spare time sounds like the stuff that minds are boggled with. But still, here you go.

The aim of the game is quite simply to diagnose problems, fix them, and turn a profit. You get to order parts, undo virtual bolts – presumably without graxing your knuckles – and hopefully put the whole thing back together again.

We have no info about whether this includes a realistic “Well, where on earth did this left-over part come from?” feature. But presumably you can get your friends to hide your keyboard or mouse for a similarly realistic experience.

At the basic level players can choose from three garages, eight different car models and 120 different repairs, and even take fixed vehicles for a test drive afterwards. Tuning is also a part of the fun. There is already a 4×4 expansion pack for really dedicated enthusiasts.

Car Mechanic Simulator offers two modes of play – career mode and endless – and is a Red Dot Games development, published by PlayWay S.A. It’s available for the PC or Mac via Steam download, and is priced at £14.99.
