Chevrolet Volt a step closer to full power with preproduction cars
Thu, 25 Jun 2009The Chevrolet Volt is nearing full power as preproduction cars are now prowling the roads around the General Motors Tech Center in suburban Detroit.
These units show us what the real-world Volt looks like and bring together the final body, interior, electric powertrain and software for the first time. Some small details are lacking, such as the graining of the interior trim. Note how the headlamps and rear spoiler aren't quite finished. And the recharge port has been moved from the driver's-door mirror to the front quarter panel. It is now covered by a round door that makes it look like a fuel filler--which it is, in a sense.
The charge port on the Volt looks somewhat like a fuel filler. It's on the front quarter panel.
GM plans to crank out 80 of these Volts, hand-built in a preproduction plant at the Tech Center. Some will rack up big miles, while others will live a short life for crash testing.
The first preproduction car was ready a week ahead of schedule, and the car is set to go into production late next year.
