Chrysler recalls Jeep Grand Cherokee, Commander
Mon, 13 May 2013
Chrysler is recalling more than 295,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander SUVs in the United States for an electrical problem that could cause the vehicles to shift into neutral unintentionally. Chrysler has received 26 reports of crashes and two injuries related to the problem.
The Jeep Grand Cherokees are from model years 2005-2010 while the Commanders were from years 2006-2010.
The problem is with an electrical circuit board that controls the transfer case. Chrysler found cracks in the board that resulted in a signal that could be misinterpreted by the final drive controller.
In September 2012, the company obtained new software code from the manufacturer that would prevent the unintended shifting.
Chrysler is conducting a voluntary recall of the vehicles, beginning in June. The company will fix the problem free of charge, which only involves reprogramming the final drive controller.
