Chrysler recalls some 2010 Jeep Wranglers over fire risk
Tue, 22 May 2012
Chrysler is recalling automatic-transmission-equipped 2010 Jeep Wranglers for a problem with the transmission skid plate. The plate, meant to protect delicate parts from rough terrain, can collect debris near the catalytic converter. That can lead to a fire.
The issue affects 67,872 Jeeps, all of which had the catalytic converter relocated for emissions purposes. If the debris isn't cleared regularly it could ignite. So far, no injuries have been reported.
Chrysler will replace the skid plates on the Wranglers, free of charge, with a skid bar. That design change was implemented later as a weight-savings measure.
The company will notify owners and begin the recall this month. For more information, owners can visit www.safercar.gov or call Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.
