Citroen C3 e-HDi 70 Airdream EGS VTR+ emits just 87g/km

You do have to wonder sometimes just how much we actually need expensive technology like hybrid powertrains and EVs when cars with conventional ICE engines can manage ridiculous mpg and emit little Co2- cars like the Citroen C3 e-HDi 70 Airdream EGS VTR+.

Citroen has announced that their super-frugal C3 with a ridiculously long name (which fortunately doesn’t seem to be painted on the boot lid) and which was first seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September, is now on sale in the UK.

The figures for the C3 e-HDI really are quite remarkable. Using Citroen’s e-HDI micro-hybrid stop and start system on the 67bhp diesel engine to produce official combined economy of 88.3mpg and emissions of 87g/km which. say Citroen, puts the EGS VTR+ amongst the most frugal and economical cars in its class.

All that adds up to a half-decent C3 – complete with panoramic roof – which attracts just 13 per cent BIK rates and doesn’t have to pay road tax or Congestion Charge.

Citroen, quite reasonably, are keen to point out that a full 50 per cent of Citroens sold in 2011 emit less than 130g/km, which will do wonders for the tax bills of company car drivers, even if the argument that we should all be buying low CO2 cars to save the environment is at best a tenuous one.

The C3 e-HDi 70 Airdream EGS VTR+ is on sale from this month at £15,290.
