Auto Bild's take on the Citroen DS1

2012 looks set to be another busy year for Citroen, with the new C1 revealed at Brussels in January and a DS1 at Geneva in March.

Citroen has certainly found its mojo again in the last couple of years, particularly with the very persuasive range of DS cars. And now it looks like we’re soon to get the baby of the DS range, with the debut of the Citroen DS1 at Geneva in the Spring.

Logically, we couldn’t expect a DS1 to burst on to the scene as a funky little urban warrior until Citroen had something to base it on. The current C1 is now six years old (as are its Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 siblings), which explains why we’ve not seen a funky baby DS so far.

But it now seems likely that Citroen will be launching the new C1 at the Brussels Motor Show in January, which leaves the way clear for the Citroen DS1 to arrive. And that looks likely to happen at Geneva in the Spring.

It seems likely that Citroen will kick off the DS1 with a concept at Geneva, perhaps followed up with a production version at the Paris Motor Show in the Autumn, before the DS1 launches in 2013. Under the bonnet will be a choice of frugal three-pot diesel and petrol engines with power from 68bhp to 100bhp. Also said to be in the mix is a more than warm DS1 GTI with 130bhp.

The Citroen DS1 looks likely to be credible challenger to the Fiat 500 if it’s only half as good as the wonderful DS3.
