College Exhibition: IED Degree Show 2007
Wed, 10 Oct 2007The Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin (IED) teamed up with Toyota to create "Prius of 2010-2015", the third year project of 26 students in the post-graduate Transportation Design Course. Led by Fulvio Fantolino, IED's Transportation Design Course Coordinator and followed in the various design stages by Elvio D'Aprile, Assistant Chief Designer at Toyota Europe Design Development, and by Tateo Uchida, General Director Research and Project Forum, the task to come up with concepts that, in addition to heightening the technological excellence, could stress the emotional element, an essential characteristic to conquer the European and world market. In all, ten projects were created and submitted to Toyota as the students' final thesis projects, showcasing a variety of different proposals for future ecological hybrid vehicles.
Waterfall
Dennis Braga and Andrea Mocellin
Characterized as being powerful and decisive, the "Waterfall" is a blend of architecture and concept, with strong character in terms of style and structure, intended to have an intimate and bold connection with nature. The concept can be seen to rise up, like roots out of the earth, making a clear distinction between exterior and interior by separating them in terms of layout, and clearly revealing itself through the idea of molding a pure object. New volumes, a theoretical continuity in every one of the vehicle's three-dimensional aspects are the result of research that aims to integrate the spatial requirements through extreme simplicity.
Antei
Jorge E. Gomez and Fernando Ocana
Intended for a world in which society takes responsibility for the ecological damage done during recent history, the "Antei" is an automobile designed to rethink the way we interact with our planet. Developed under the concept of transparency, the process of design focused on the objective of reaching a perfect symbiosis between the high technology applied on the vehicle and the ecological personality expressed by a hybrid. The Antei, meaning equilibrium, communicates what this car stands for: the beginning of a new era for society, the moment in which we will rationally evolve to the future.
Stallion
Eduardo Olivares Ruiz Velasco and Patrick Hur
Designed to satisfy young adults (aged 30-40), the "Stallion" aims to identify with families of one or two children wishing to own a high performance car without spending too much in the process. The concept takes nature as its starting point and its inspiration from the horse, used as the form to represent a summation emotion, passion, interactivity, sensuality, power and adrenalin. The creation of the speed form of the horse in action is transferred into the vehicle's volumes, giving rise to a dynamic and attractive shape.
H.A.L.O. (Hybrid Advance Line Over)
Michele Deconcini and Fabrizio Salerno
This concept is billed as an advanced hybrid vehicle that symbolizes the blueprint for future generations of wheel-based transportation. With bodywork entirely designed in Skydome featuring different levels of opaqueness, the H.A.L.O. becomes a natural habitat that enables users to feel the space being traveled through - following to the philosophy "I see all I want to see, but I only reveal what is necessary". Visible engines can be seen through a polycarbonate panel from the interior, which includes only two instruments to verify propulsion functions.
Forma
Marco Cerrato, Enrico Remolif and Danilo Tosetti
Among the ten concepts presented was "Forma", a proposal which sought to bring out the emotional aspect of design. By employing simple, basic elements, brought together by a clean technology, Forma is one of the projects which garnered much praise as it best answered the requirements indicated in the initial brief.
