Design Contest: Interior Motives Awards 2011

Thu, 07 Jul 2011

Shortlisted entries have been announced for the 2011 Interior Motives Student Design Awards. After individual deliberation by our panel of renowned senior designers, students being tutored at colleges in a diverse range of countries including Israel, the Czech Republic, Australia, Taiwan, Canada and China, as well as in the established centres of Europe, the USA and Japan/Korea, have made the 68-strong shortlist of potential winners. Full details of this year's contenders can be viewed here.

Students worked to briefs devised in collaboration with Peugeot and Volkswagen within the overall theme of 'Back to Basics - Making Cars for People, Not Markets'.

The judging panel comprised some of the biggest names in vehicle design, including Volkswagen's Romulus Rost and Wolfgang Müller-Pietralla, Andreas Stump of Citroën, Peugeot's Amko Leenarts, Anne Asensio of Dassault Systèmes, Nissan Design Europe's Victor Nacif, Jeff Perkins of General Motors, Ford's Scott Strong, Klaus Busse of Chrysler, McLaren's Frank Stephenson, Bentley's Robin Page, and Jurgen Uedelhoven of Uedelhoven Studios.

Students who received a vote from any one of the judges made the shortlist.

In a change to previous years, the entire panel then travelled to London to take part in a live, round-table judging event to select the finalists and winners in each of the eight categories. Chaired by the Editor of Interior Motives, Euan Sey, the panel shared many hours of lively debate before determining the winning designs.  They then came to an almost unanimous - and unprecedented - agreement on one of them as overall 2011 Interior Motives Student Design of the Year.

The judges have promised to keep this information top secret, however, until the competition reaches its public climax at the prestigious awards ceremony to be held at Frankfurt's renowned Cocoon Club on Wednesday 14 September, the evening of the second motor show press day.

Attendees  will have the opportunity of viewing displays and videos of the work of all the finalists, of meeting the students themselves, and then eating, drinking and dancing to conclude both this year's competition and the Frankfurt press days.

Students are competing for awards in the following categories:

Best eco interior Best use of technology Best innovative interior Best ergonomics Best conceptual interior Best production interior Best conceptual exterior Best artistic visualisation

A cheque for $500 will be awarded to the winner of each category. The creator(s) of the 2011 Student Design of the Year will receive $5000 and the memory of being singled out for this ultimate accolade by some of the most influential figures in car design.

The 2011 Interior Motives Student Design Awards is supported by Gold Sponsors Volkswagen, Peugeot, Dassault Systèmes, Dinamica by Miko, Federal-Mogul and Uedelhoven Studios.
