Design Contest: Terra Prix 2085

Thu, 19 May 2011

Local Motors is back once again with another design competition. Unlike previous contests that aim to produce cars through open source design, the Terra Prix 2085 contest is set firmly in the future.

As the name would suggest, the concept is based around the idea of future motorsport: an around the world race taking in all continents and every variety of terrain. With such variation in the racing environments, combined with long stints between ‘checkpoints’, there is an underlying key focus on longevity and adaptability. Local Motors says that the contest aims to ‘open the floodgates of creativity’ in its applicants.

Contestants are expected to create a land-based race craft with enough room for two occupants and provisions as well as an airborne support craft capable of accomodating 15 team members, spare parts and any other necessary equipment required for victory.

In another variation from the norm, Local Motors' flourishing online community will not determine the winner of this competition. Instead, a panel of experts including Syd Mead, Scott Robertson, Daniel Simon and Harald Belker will judge this competition. The Local Motors community will, however, still have chance to vote, collaborate and encourage innovation.

The competition is now open on the Local Motors website, which explains the competition, deliverables and brief in more detail. Submissions for Terra Prix 2085 will be accepted from Tuesday May 31 and run for a week – before the competition closes on the June 14.
