Detroit Electric, Geely to develop fleet EVs for China
Fri, 26 Apr 2013
Geely Automobile Group and startup electric automaker Detroit Electric Inc. have agreed to develop electric vehicles and electric drivetrains for sale in China.
Under the deal, the first EV will be a modified version of Geely's Emgrand EC7, which will go on sale early next year.
Initially, the vehicle will be sold to businesses and government fleets. The companies expect to sell 3,000 units in the first year of sales, with annual deliveries eventually rising to 30,000 units.
The partners also formed a joint venture to produce EV powertrains near Geely's headquarters in Hangzhou.
The EC7-EV will be available as two models: one with a range of 102 miles, the other with a range of 160 miles. Its top speed will exceed 124 mph.
Detroit Electric debuted its first production vehicle, the SP:01 electric roadster, last week at the Shanghai auto show. The SP:01 goes into production in August.
