Drivers 'concerned at lack of goodwill'

Fri, 03 Jan 2014

MOTORISTS have been left concerned at the lack of goodwill among other drivers during this festive period, according to research from Halfords Autocentres.

The levels of ‘aggressive, impatient and inconsiderate’ driving increase at this time of year, according to the survey of an unspecified number of car owners.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of respondents said that things like lane hogging, failing to indicate properly - or at all - and not letting other motorists out at junctions was a real problem at this time of year.

However, the Highway Code stipulates that drivers on a main carriageway are not required to let those waiting at junctions out. In addition, drivers who roll out onto the carriageway in an attempt to force traffic to stop are effectively illegally creating an obstruction - an offence punishable by fine or penalty points.

The research, therefore, may indicate a lack of knowledge from some of the drivers taking part, but it is not clear whether the bad habits listed were included separately or bundled together as a collection of examples.

Rory Carlin from Halfords Autocentres said: “From our survey drivers are noticing a general lack of courteous driving at this time of the year.

“It seems that the festivities take their toll on the nation’s road manners and tempers flare leading to less kindness and unselfish behaviour from some motorists.”
