EBay exotic: Toyota 2000GT
Wed, 25 May 2011
Our friends over at Bring a Trailer discovered this example of a right-hand-drive 1968 Toyota 2000GT for sale on eBay. The rear-wheel-drive, front-engine sports car’s engine is seized, but with the quality sheetmetal, it’s still worth a look.
The VIN is claimed to be MF10-10129, while the engine is numbered 3M-10189. The car was originally registered in Mozambique while it was still a colony of Portugal. The car finally returned to Portugal in 1976, and it still resides there, and on eBay, where it has no reserve.
The Toyota 2000 GT was only built from 1967 to 1970, in partnership with Yamaha. The motorcycle company developed a prototype for Nissan that eventually would be brought to market by Toyota. In 1965, it debuted at the Tokyo motor show. When the 2000 GT was new, it was expensive and rare. Only few hundred were made in the three-year run.
The Toyota 2000 GT is seen by most as the first (and, some would argue, the last) collectible car to arrive from Japan. Similar examples have sold at auction in the United States for $375,000.
