Electric Porsche Cayenne – the eRuf Stormster
Thu, 10 Dec 2009The Electric Cayenne eRuf
We know that Porche will produce a hybrid Cayenne when the next generation Cayenne hits the roads next year (and may even churn one out in the current shape before that). And it’s always possible that they have in mind a full electric Cayenne. After all, even though the Cayenne is a far from lightweight beast it does have enough room to store a decent bank of batteries.
The hybrid Cayenne is actually an appealing prospect, offering as it does the performance of a V8 with the economy of a V6 and a proper driving experience. Not too sure about an electric Cayenne with current battery technology, though. But those Cayenne ‘Enhancing’ chaps at Ruf have decided that the time is right for an electric Cayenne, so they’ve bolted one together and trollied it off to the European Climate Change conference in Copenhagen.
The Porsche Cayenne eRuf Stormster has a 270 kW Siemens motor and a bank of lithium ion batteries, which are apparently the first European car batteries made using ceramic storage technology. So there. Performance won’t frighten the peasants too much with a claimed 0-60mph in 10 seconds, a top speed of 93 mph and a claimed range of 125 miles. As long as you only poodle around.
Ruf says the eRuf Strormset will go in to production but gave no indication of price. I think I’ll wait for the hybrid Cayenne so I can save the planet.
