Regular readers may remember that we exclusively reported that Zagato were working on five Ferrari 550 Barchettas to create the Ferrari 550 GTZ just over a year ago. That report caused all sorts of grief as Zagato and their photographer threatened us with all manner of hellfire and brimstone for spoiling their secret.

The resulting grief meant we had to take down their photos, but our story stood. That story was all about the Ferrari 550 GTZ being a swansong for Zagato-built one-off Ferraris as Ferrari were taking all customisation in-house at Marenello in the future.

The ‘End of an Era’ tag for the 550 Zagato meant a rather optimistic price tag of over £1 million for each car – four LHD and one RHD. We do know that at least two of the four LHD cars sold at the asking price, but the RHD car didn’t find any takers.

Which is why it found itself up for grabs at Bonhams last night, where it sold for a quite unremarkable £353k including buyers premium. Around one third of the original asking price. Which means someone has taken a bit of a bath on the car. Still, the buyer has acquired a very special car at a very sensible price.

Can’t imagine the buyers of the full price LHD cars will be too thrilled this morning.
