First BMW i8 Hybrids delivered to customers – complete with Laser Lights
Fri, 06 Jun 2014The first BMW i8s delivered in Germany
The new BMW i8 hybrid supercar was finally revealed in production guise at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and by the time it went in to production the whole of the 2014 run of i8s was sold out. Apart from its innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain, the i8 offers many new technologies, one of which is a set of laser lights which deliver a much brighter main beam than LED and looked set to be the first time such lights have appeared on a production car.
But Audi tried to upset BMW’s applecart by revealing the R8 LMX last month, which also came with laser lights, and looked set to arrive with customers before the i8. But it looks like BMW have brought forward the first deliveries of the i8 to grab the kudos of being the first car maker to offer laser lights.
At a ceremony at BMW Welt in Munich yesterday, BMW delivered the first customer i8s, every one with the full laser lights package, to the first eight i8 owners.
Roland Krüger, BMW’s head os sales and marketing in Germany, said:
In November of last year, we welcomed the first BMW i3 customers here at BMW Welt. Today, we are continuing the BMW i success story with the first eight BMW i8 customers worldwide.
As ‘the first of a new era’, the BMW i8 combines the sustainable design of a carbon-fibre body with a powerful plug-in hybrid. This success would not be possible without our retail partners. We are delighted that our BMW i agents are accompanying us on the road to the future of mobility.
What he didn’t add, but implied, was that BMW also stuck it to Audi with the i8′s laser lights.
