First Sight: Volvo Concept You

Tue, 13 Sep 2011

Volvo today revealed its Concept You at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show, as the company continues to evolve its luxury car range.

The latest evolution of the Concept Universe, first unveiled at Shanghai earlier this year, showcases the technology and craftsmanship that Volvo will be using in its future line-up, including smart pad technology and a touch-control cockpit.

The emphasis on technology reflects the importance of infotainment in current society and immerses the driver to give them complete control and mobile connectivity. Smart pads have therefore replaced buttons an controls, meaning the cabin itself is sleek with increased space.

Four main areas are the focal point of the new Concept You. A digital Driver Information Monitor, a head-up display on the windshield, a touch screen on the upper center console and another touch-screen between the individual rear seats. The steering wheel is also decorated with integrated touch screens. A hidden infrared camera registers eye movements, with information being displayed on the screen, while another sensor tracks hand movements and acts as a trigger for the infotainment system's control mode.

Different options are on offer depending on whether it is the driver accessing the screen or the passenger in the front seat. Internet access is available only to the passenger when the car is moving. Data from the central smart pad can be sent to the head-up display and can also connect to the screen nearest the rear seat passengers.

The four individual seats are created using chrome-free leather and the back of the front seats and the door panels feature exclusive Italian fabric and designs from the Swedish fashion house Oscar Jacobson. The wooden cabin floor is designed to reflect traditional Scandinavian homes and is covered in a carpet created by Swedish brand Kasthall.
