General Motors CEO Dan Akerson is auctioning off his 1958 Regal turquoise Chevrolet Corvette for Habitat for Humanity Detroit. The proceeds will go to rebuild the Morningside Commons area of the lower east side of the city.
Interested buyers can get a preview of the car during the Woodward Dream Cruise. It will be on exhibit at the 60th anniversary Corvette display at the Birmingham Triangle in downtown Birmingham, Mich. Akerson's ride will sit alongside more than 200 Corvettes spanning all 60 years of production. Alternately, people can go to www.facebook.com/corvette.
Distinguishing features of the '58 Corvette include dual headlights and twin chrome trunk spears. Safety belts were factory installed for the first time, and in total, only 510 were painted in Regal turquoise.
"The 1958 Corvette is a great example of American passion and ingenuity, and my hope is that the auction will help bring attention and resources to Habitat's efforts to revitalize a historic Detroit neighborhood," said Akerson. "I love this Corvette, and if putting it on the block can help rebuild the heart and soul of a neighborhood, I am all for it."
