Google Glasses driver has ticket torn up

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

An American driver who was fined for driving while wearing Google Glasses has had the ticket torn up.

Cecilia Abadie was stopped by police in California who said the Google Glass digital spectacles fell foul of laws banning drivers from watching TV when behind the wheel.

However, Abadie claimed the Glasses were not switched on – and do not give drivers any blind spots.

The San Diego court commissioner ruled that there was no evidence that the device was operating – and also chucked out a speeding fine issued to Ms Abadie at the same time.

Google Glass is a hands-free computer that provides information like directions and weather reports, and is currently being trialled by an estimated 30,000 people.

This was the first time anyone has been taken to court over the use of the device, meaning it is likely to set a precedent for future cases.

Google hasn’t said when its Glasses will be publically available, however speculation suggests we could be using the hands-free device within the next few months.
