Honda introduces dual-clutch hybrid transmissions
Tue, 13 Nov 2012
Honda explained its three new hybrid transmission options on Monday. There's one for small cars, one for plug-ins and one high-performance unit, which we assume will be in the next Acura NSX. Amazingly, none are continuously variable. The new drive systems feature one, two or three built-in electric motors.
The one-motor sport hybrid intelligent dual-clutch drive combines a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a built-in high-output motor and battery. Honda says the setup improves efficiency by more than 30 percent compared to a conventional one-motor hybrid system.
The two-motor sport hybrid intelligent multi-mode drive/plug-in combines a new engine dedicated to hybrids with two built-in motors and a lock-up clutch, along with a lithium-ion battery. The system switches between three driving profiles: EV Drive is for driving with the electric motor only; Engine Drive is for medium to high-speed cruising with the engine and axle connected by a clutch; and Hybrid Drive is for powerful acceleration using the motor and electricity generated by the engine. The system will be offered on the Honda Accord Plug-in, which will be introduced in January.
The third system—and the one we're most excited about—is the three motor, sport hybrid with Honda's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. This setup is a combination of a V6 and three motors, two of them at the rear wheels. This allows different amounts of torque to be applied to inside and outside wheels. This should be the system in the NSX, with a 3.5-liter V6 and seven-speed dual-clutch.
We'll learn more about the new systems at the Detroit auto show in January.
