Infiniti Q50 (2013) teaser video of new sports saloon

The first car to emerge under Infiniti's new naming structure will be the Q50, due at the Detroit motor show in January 2013.

The Q50 will replace the rare-groove G37 saloon, and attempt to propel Nissan's luxury arm into the hotly contested small exec saloon battleground.

While the Q50 will fight established posh saloons like the BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-class, it'll also spawn a Q60 two-door coupe and cabriolet range, like its German rivals.

After the outgoing G37 suffered for its one-size engine range (a thirsty 3.7-litre petrol V6 shared with the Nissan 370Z sports car), Infiniti will join the market trend for downsizing with its new Q-badged cars. Expect 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines to form the backbone of the Q50 range, and a hybrid model to rival the new Lexus IS, also due in Detroit in January 2013.

It's a busy period for Infiniti ahead: along with an entire model range overhaul, the company has also announced it'll build its 1-series rival hatchback in Sunderland from 2015.
