It seems the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is going in to production after all

It seems the Range Rover Evoque Convertible (pictured) is actually going in to production

We weren’t very complimentary about the Range Rover Evoque Convertible when it was revealed in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show last year.

And we were relieved when we heard just a few months ago that Land Rover weren’t going to push ahead with production of the Evoque Convertible after all. But it seems that report was incorrect, as What Car are reporting that Land Rover has actually approved the Evoque Convertible for production. Good Lord.

We get the Evoque; it’s a stunning translation of the concept on which it’s based and has carved out a very successful niche in the market all its own. It’s also been very cleverly marketed.

And we understand Land Rover wanting to pander to the wants of its new type of customers; those who glow orange in the dark and love to flaunt any trophy of their affluence at every opportunity.

But surely there are better ways to extend the appeal of the Range Rover Evoque than chopping its stunningly sloping roof off and replacing it with a lump of canvas?

An Evoque Sport – with perhaps the new V6 Supercharged under the bonnet turned up to 11 – or the mooted Grand Evoque with an extra bit of length, and room for the same sort of kiddies occasional seats you can get in the new Range Rover Sport, would be a better way to grow the Evoque franchise?

But if the Evoque Convertible is going in to production it will at least be the best looking convertible SUV on the market. But that has more to do with the only other option being the Murano Convertible, rather than any inherent appeal in the Evoque Convertible’s looks.

Because, try as we may, we can’t find anything redeeming in the idea of a production Evoque Convertible. It’s hideous.
