Jaguar CUV, entry-level sedan on the horizon

Tue, 07 May 2013

UPDATED: Jaguar Land Rover has submitted two trademark applications to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, a potential clue to the luxury brand's 2015 product plans.

Reports from Edmunds.com and others state that the "XQ" and "Q-Type" names could be used on an all-wheel-drive crossover and new sub-$40,000 sedan for 2015.

Company vice president of public relations Stuart Schorr said the registration doesn't specifically indicate any exact plans.

"We certainly have made clear we are looking to expand our Jaguar lineup in the future, but have not shared anymore specific plans," Schorr said.

According to the application, the trademarks were registered for motor vehicles and structural parts.

Any Jaguar SUV would likely make use of the brand's new lightweight-aluminum architecture seen on the new Land Rover Range Rover, and serve as an Audi Q5 fighter; an entry-level sedan would compete against the Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Jaguar Land Rover North America CEO Andy Goss told Automotive News that the brand has an "image problem," and is trying to expand the brand's presence in the U.S. We'll question whether X is the best way to correct Jag's image after the ill-fated Jaguar X-Type, but at least the next one won't be a rebadged Mondeo.
