Jaguar to re-create Lightweight E-type
Wed, 14 May 2014
Jaguar is embarking on its first ever re-creation project, and we think collectors will be pleased. The company plans to build six brand-new Lightweight E-types. They will fill in the missing six chassis numbers from the car's original planned run of 18 units in 1963.
The Lightweight E-type project began in February ‘63. Twelve cars were made, along with two spare bodies, all making extensive use of aluminum in the body panels and in the engine block. To shave pounds, the Lightweights lacked some interior trim and featured hand-operated side windows for a total weight savings of 250 pounds versus than the standard E-type.
The original cars -- and hence the re-creation -- are powered by a 3.8-liter, 300-hp inline six engine. All were built with Lucas fuel injection and a ZF five-speed gearbox.
Jaguar says it expects a high demand for the new-old car. Jaguar collectors will be prioritized among potential customers. The first Lightweight E-type will make its public debut later this summer. We’ll find out more information, like how much one of these might cost, at that time.
