Job lot of 54 Hyundai Sonatas on eBay for £220k

Mon, 30 Sep 2013

What could you buy for £220,000? Perhaps a one-bedroom flat in Richmond-on-Thames? Maybe a pre-owned Rolls-Royce Phantom? Or even a secondhand Sunseeker Portofino powerboat?

Pah! They’re nice enough choices, we grant you. But roll up, roll up, because MSN Cars has unearthed the deal of the century. Never to be repeated. Don’t miss out. Grab a bargain. Insert other market-stall cliches here, and then brace yourself.

For £220,000, you could own no less than 54 left-hand drive Hyundai Sonatas. Yes, we know you may need to sit down to take in this news, but the fact remains, for less than a quarter of million pounds you could be driving away in a selection of 2006 to 2009-vintage Korean saloons.

Well, we say drive away. You’ll need to 53 of your closest friends to do that. Or several car transporters.

The ‘job lot’ is currently for sale on eBay, where the vendor tells us they were destined for Libya. When the shipping fees weren’t paid, they ended up at the shipping company’s HQ at a European port.

All of them are left-hand drive, petrol-engined automatic Sonatas, each one equipped with air conditioning. Probably a must-have accessory in the Middle East.

At around £4,074 per car, this is incredible value for money. Sure, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to take advantage of Hyundai’s famed five-year warranty, but how many opportunities do you get to own a Libyan Sonata? Albeit one that never actually reached Libya…

Think of the possibilities. There’s the potential for an all-new (or rather, nearly new) one-make race series here. Imagine the joy of seeing 54 Sonata autos ‘tearing’ around the Silverstone circuit.

Or how about an exclusive left-hand drive Hyundai Sonata taxi firm? Ideal for those times when your customer asks you to drop them in Europe. You won’t need to get out of the car to use the tollbooths.

Maybe you could launch your very own left-hand drive Hyundai Sonata Owners Club? A very exclusive club, sure. But a club all the same.

There’s even the opportunity to start your very own ’80s music tribute act, featuring Renée and Sonata. The possibilities are endless.

Admittedly, that last one’s pushing it.
