Koenigsegg Quant – it’s an Electric Car!

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Christian Von Koenigsegg is as mad as a hatter. But good mad, not bad mad. He has outrageous ideas, but has the nous to see them through. And the Koenigsegg Quant is some idea.

But actually, this isn’t all Christian’s idea. The project stems from a commission to Koenigsegg from NLV Solar AG, a fellow Swedish firm, to ‘develop and design a car of the future’. The result is the Koenigsegg Quant – a four seater electric car utilising NLV’s solar electric technology.

The Quant is a RWD car – with a pair of electric motors, one for each driven wheel. The motors have a combined power of around 550bhp and 527lb/ft of torque. We’re getting close to the SSC Ultimate Aero EV fantasy figures (unfair – SSC hasn’t shown the car yet!), and by any measure it’s a significant amount of power for a 4 seater car.

The likely weight of the car is around 1780kg, which will mean a 0-60 in the very low 5 seconds and a top speed of around 170mph. Not quite in Koenigsegg CCXR territory, but impressive none the less.

Weight is helped by a carbon fibre backbone and a proprietary (to NLV) power storage system called Flow Accumulator Energy Storage, which weighs in around 450kg and contains no hazardous or heavy metal parts. NLV reckons the system can be charged from flat in around 20 minutes and give a range of over 300 miles (this is starting to make SSC’s claims for their EV more credible – can they both be in cuckoo land?). The range is helped by a solar coating applied to the bodywork (probably of little use in the UK) and a brake regeneration system

We can’t call this a four door car, because it only has two. But they are very wide Gullwing doors that are wide enough to access the front and back. Inside I’m sure we’ll see lots of gizmos and gadgets, but it’s the performance and emissions that will grab the headlines.

Koenigsegg are currently working on the first working prototype. I do hope they get it out before SSC deliver the first working SSC Aero EV.
