Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo at 1994 prices

More on the ‘Recession-Busting’ deals that abound from car makers at the moment.

Subaru has come up with a deal for the Impreza WRX Turbo where you can have the car for the same price as the 1994 equivalent – just £17,798. Which in itself is an interesting figure and shows that cars, or certainly the Impreza in this case, have got cheaper in real terms. The current list price of the Impreza is, as near as makes little difference, £20k. But if you use the retail price index, and take the 1994 price of the Impreza, it should be costing around £25.5k today. Interesting.

So is this a blindingly good deal? Well, it’s pretty much in line with what you should be able to haggle from a dealer anyway. It’s a bit less than Skoda’s ‘Vat Free’ offer, but its gets some headlines, and people write about it (don’t we just!).

The Impreza Turbo started the whole super car saloon fad in the nineties, and its proved not just a hugely fun car, but it is as tough as old boots. It offers a great blend of fun and practicality. Coupled with a pretty iron-clad warranty – 60,000 miles and three years, plus 12 years anti-corrosion and 3 years paintwork – it’s a very safe buy. And it allows you to play at sensible saloons without having to forego all the joys of a boy-racer.

But to be frank, this Impreza is a bit of a let-down. It’s not exactly the best looking car on the block, and the performance isn’t as great as you might think. But still, it’s bullet proof, it makes you think you’re still young, and it’s relatively cheap. Subarus are the rallying equivalent of F1s Ferrari, so it has kudos (as long as you don’t mind people expecting you to be an oik in a baseball cap and rally jacket when you tell them you drive a Subaru!).
