Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Gearbox fix creates recall

It’s reported that Lamborghini are recalling the Aventador LP700-4 to correct gearbox problems.

Last month we reported that the Lamborghini Aventador was suffering from gearbox problems, and that Lamborghini were delaying the delivery of cars afflicted until they could find a fix. Which wasn’t a great surprise for a new, small run car.

But despite our digging around and speaking to a few Aventador owners whose cars were undriveable because the gearbox didn’t work properly, Lamborghini phoned us (twice) to point out that our story was wrong and that there were no gearbox issues on the LP700-4. Just as they did when we exclusively revealed the Reventon Roadster was on the way, and they told us we were wrong.

But now we’re told that all Aventadors in the wild are to be recalled to fix a gearbox software issue. Which is not a huge surprise. Not because we knew real owners (and dealers) with real problems, but because all small car makers have trouble getting software to work properly out of the gate in the real world.

If only Lamborghini had stood up and revealed the problem – just like Ron Dennis did with the McLaren 12C – then they’d be praised for reacting promptly to problems. Instead, they just look silly for trying to bury a real - and not product-damaging – issue with the Aventador.

But at least those with delayed Aventadors, and those who’ve got their cars and can’t drive them – shouldn’t have to wait too long for a software update.

And despite the problems – and the obfuscation – we still think the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is an astonishing car that shows niche cars at three times the price how things should be done.
