Lamborghini Aventador roadster revealed

Mon, 12 Nov 2012

The much-anticipated Lamborghini Aventador roadster is joining the supercar stable of the famous Italian purveyor of performance.

The LP 700-4 Aventador roadster will cost in the neighborhood of $445,300, and it can be ordered at any Lamborghini dealership. It follows the one-off Aventador J (for Jota) that was revealed this spring at the Geneva motor show. That one sold immediately for about $2.8 million to an unnamed buyer.

The spotlight feature is the two-piece carbon-fiber roof. Each element weighs about 13 pounds, which Lamborghini says allows for easy handling and storage in the front compartment. It also makes for a minimal weight gain for the Aventador roadster.

The roadster setup is reinforced with an occupant protection system, and the rear pillar is redesigned. There's also a power rear windscreen and a wind deflector.

The rear cover features hexagon-shaped windows that allow for ventilation and a view of the engine.

The powertrain is carried over from the fixed roof Lamborghini Aventador, which debuted in 2011. It makes 691 hp from a 6.5-liter V12 paired with a seven-speed gearbox. It has cylinder deactivation and start/stop features.

Lamborghini is adding a light blue to its color palette, which is featured on the new Aventador roadster. The Italian company says it's reminiscent of a shade used by the 1968 Miura roadster.

The new car rolls on a fresh set of forged aluminum wheels which measure 20 inches in front and 21 inches in the rear. They are said to be 22 pounds lighter than the standard set.

Stay tuned for more Lamborghini Aventador roadster news and photos to come.
