Local Motors launches Pacific Northwest competition

Local Motors' 20th design competition, themed 'Thrive in the Elements,' opens for submissions starting today, 17 March. The new American car company is calling for entrants to design a car based around the four core elements: Earth, wind, fire and water; challenging designers to create a vehicle that will 'inspire Pacific Northwesterners to thrive'. The deadline for entries is 30 March 2010.

Known for its sprawling wilderness, lakes, rivers, ocean, mountains and active volcanoes, the Pacific Northwest is an extreme setting that will require a vehicle suitable to the multi-faceted terrains and for multiple purposes. Using the variation of the region's atmospheric elements as inspiration, designers are asked to design an athletic, energetic vehicle with seating for three to six passengers. Four-wheel-drive is also cited as a necessity.

Competition entrants are encouraged to create a vehicle inspired by the elements or specifically tailored to allow the users to better experience the elements, all while causing little to no environmental impact. The brief stipulates that designers should strive to employ recycled and/or recyclable materials, and that the vehicle should use commonly available alternative fuel sources.

All Local Motors community members aged 18 and older are invited to participate in this competition and cast their votes online until 6 April 2010. As with past contests, the first place winner will receive $1,500, while the second and third place winners will be awarded $300 and $200 respectively.
