Lotus Evora S GP Edition: Lotus evokes its GP history
Wed, 12 Oct 2011Lotus Evora S GP Edition - just 3 being built.
There was a time when the tobacco giants were seemingly single-handedly responsible for sports sponsorship, and perhaps the most evocative memory of that is the John Player Special F1 cars from Lotus. And now they’re back – in a sense – with the Lotus Evora S GP Edition.
The Evora S GP Edition gets a paint job which will take older readers right back to the 1960s (and ’70s and ’80s) with a black exterior highlighted with gold stripes and a set of gold wheels. All that’s missing are the JPS logos.
Extras in the Evora S GP include the Premium Package – which offers mood lighting, a front armrest, better mats and leather – and the Technology Package – which offers Cruise, SatNav, Bluetooth, 7″ touchscreen and parking sensors. Lotus are also throwing in a rear view camera.
Under the bonnet things appear to be staying the same. That means a 3.5 litre V6 with 345bhp and 295lb/ft of torque, delivering a 0-60mph of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 172mph.
You might be tempted to think that the Evora S GP Edition is the start of a Lotus plan to boost sales (it’s only sold 274 cars in the UK this year), but you’d be wrong. Lotus are only going to build 3 Evora S GPs, and each will cost £69,950.
Which won’t exactly send sales through the roof at Hethel.
