MINI compares Classic Mini to Porsche 911

The Classic Mini & Classic Porsche 911

A comparison between the classic Mini and the Porsche 911 may not be the most obvious, but that hasn’t stopped MINI jumping on the 911′s 50th anniversary year with a comparison between the two iconic cars.

MINI assert that the similarities between the classic Mini and the 911 are based on their ‘Forever Young’ ethos (which is, in no small part, down to the fact both are still clearly similar to the original design)  and their performance.

The Mini arrived before the 911 – Mini in 1959, 911 in 1963 – but both turned the car world on its head with a delightful turn of design, speed and appeal, with the original Mini ending up selling 5.3 million and the, still continuing, 911 starting to close in on a million sales.

MINI reflect that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche could never have envisaged his 911 becoming the most successful sports car of all time and that Alec Issigonis would never have expected his Mini to become the ‘World’s only cool small car’, with both cars becoming proper icons and living on far beyond any realistic expectations at launch.

MINI also draw parallels in Motorsport too between the Mini and 911, with the 911 the most successful racing car ever built and Mini making the Monte Carlo Rally its very own in the hands of Rauno Aaltonen.

Surprisingly, MINI also make mention of the silly challenge in 2010 between a MINI and a 911, where MINI moved the goalposts by setting up a stupidly tight course at the Atlanta Track in the car park to try and beat the 911 with its nimbleness. But the 911 still failed.

It’s all a bit of opportunistic PR to piggy-back the 911′s anniversary year, even though there are vaild comparisons between two cars that changed the face of sports cars and city cars.

But it does mean we can publish a nice site of photos of a classic 911 and an (almost) classic Mini.
