‘Old’ Mini – that’s Mini without all the capital letters – ‘owned’ rallying for a period in the 1960s. Particularly the Monte Carlo Rally, which it won in 1964, 1965 and 1967.

Names like Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno Altonen – well, more so Paddy in the UK – became as well-known as Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton are today. And the Mini became a star.

All those rally adventures did Mini sales no harm at all, so MINI are now planning to go back to the future and are taking the MINI Countryman WRC Rallying, as we reported last summer,

As a bit if a tease and a warm up for that WRC outing, MINI has put together a video showing the MINI Countryman WRC in action, interspersed with shots of the original 1960s Rally Minis and some famous faces - Paddy Hopkirk among them.

For those of us old enough to remember – although even I was but a boy in short pants when Mini ruled the rally world – seeing MINI back in rallying is hugely evocative.

And very promising.
