Maserati GranCabrio Sport at Geneva

With only a week until the press days for the Geneva Motor Show kick off, news of the reveals to be are coming in quickly. This morning we get confirmation of a harder-edged GranCabrio from Maserati – the Maserati GranCabrio Sport. Which we assume will be the Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sport in the US and Oz.
Maserati say the GranCabrio Sport is “…a harder-edged model to sit alongside the GranTurismo S and the Quattroporte Sport GT S” and will get a more powerful version of the regular GranCabrio’s 4.7 litre V8.
In standard form the 4.7 litre V8 in the GranCabrio produces 434bhp but in the GranCabrio Sport will get a whole 444bhp. Be still, my beating heart. But the extra horses do come with that modern oxymoron – more power but better economy.
The GranCabrio gets the ZF six-speed auto from the Quattroporte Sport GTS complete with the rather swift MC Auto Shift Software which, together with a ‘Friction Reducing Programme’ on the engine has – according to Maserati – produced a car which is ‘more reactive to the driver’s most-nuanced inputs’, and the tweaked ‘box gives you ‘optimised gearshift response resulting in an even-greater engagement’. Which all sounds rather pleasant.
The GranCabrio Sport also gets tweaked suspension, better brakes and some titivated exterior cosmetics. Those titivations include a black grill with red bits on the badge, new side skirts, new headlights and body-colored front splitter. There’s also a new colour – Rosso Trionfale – inspired by 1950s Maserati racers.
We should see the Maserati GranCabrio Sport on sale in the UK by the Autumn. But we reckon it’s going to be distinctly the wrong side of £100k.
It does look good, though.
