Maybach Coupe – we warned you it was coming!

The Maybach Coupe

Mercedes have really tried hard to get the world to love its Playstation on wheels dressed up in its finest woods and leathers and given the moniker of a long dead marque. But the wealthy of this world seem to have made it clear – the Maybach is a bit of a loser.

It shouts too loud; it tries too hard and it costs too much. Particulary when you weigh it up against the far more discrete and successful Rolls Royce Phantom. And if you look at the even bigger clangers Mercedes have dropped by introducing an even more Maybach-ed Maybach in the Maybach Zeppelin and a roofless version for several arms and a herd of legs more – the Maybach Landaulet – you start to realise that Maybach is really a lost cause.

We reported back in March that our insiders at Mercedes were telling us that Maybach would be allowed to wither on the vine and that the swansong for this revival of the Maybach Marque would be a limited edition run of 100 Maybach Coupes.

Which is exactly what we’re getting, although Mercedes are still denying the end of Maybach. The Maybach Coupes are being made by German firm Xenatec although it’s believed they have been designed and engineered by Mercedes. But one step removed from Mercedes makes it easier to shrug and walk away if they don’t sell (we know – cynics).

The Maybach Coupe gets the same underpinnings as the Maybach 57S but is wider and lower. It would appear the Coupe is being tweaked to give a more sporting ride and handling, although it will still be a barge. And cost over £550.000.

We can’t see this flying off the shelf. Maybe if they’d built theExelero…
