Mazda Hazumi Geneva concept car hints at next 2 supermini

Sun, 23 Feb 2014

Mazda has issued this solitary teaser image of the new Hazumi concept car, which will be unveiled fully at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

The Mazda Hazumi will give plenty of clues about the next generation Mazda 2 supermini, bound for showrooms in 2015.

It's plain to see from this shadowy teaser photo that the next Mazda 2 will gain plenty of design inspiration from the latest family look as seen on the Mazda 3 rival for VW's Golf.

No details have been announced yet, but Mazda cryptically admits "the dynamic new subcompact concept points the way to the future". It says Hazumi is Japanese for "bound" or "spring up", suggesting the coiled aggression of its new supermini.

New superminis - and smaller Mazda diesels, too

Alongside the Hazumi will be another world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show: the company's new in-house, smaller-capacity diesel engine.

The Skyactiv-D is a 1.5 turbodiesel designed to slot into many of the company's products - just in time to surf the downsizing wave, as buyers and companies scramble into smaller cars to cut their fuel and tax bills.

It's expected that the Hazumi will be available with the 1.5-litre diesel engine, as well as the 3 hatchback. Over time we would expect it to feature across most of the Mazda range, including the CX-5 crossover and 6 family car.

Also at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show will be a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the evergreen Mazda MX-5. See MSN Cars' own MX-5 silver anniversary homage here.
