Mazda MX-5 20th Anniversary Edition at Geneva
Mon, 01 Feb 2010Mazda are launching the UK and European MX-5 20th Anniversary Edition at Geneva
The Mazda MX-5 20th Anniversary Edition is launching at the Geneva Motor Show in March. But if you come to Cars UK regularly you will now be asking yourself “Didn’t that get launched last year?” And the answer is yes – we reported on the MX-5 20th at the time – but only in Japan for the JDM. At the time we reckoned it would take a few months to reach the UK and Europe. But it will have taken eight months by the time it turns up at the Geneva Motor Show.
You can’t blame Mazda for wanting to make the most of an anniversary for the MX-5. It’s has carved a niche of its own in the last twenty years, offering affordable, fun and simple open-topped motoring. It emulates all that was great about affordable open cars in the sixties but factors in great build quality and reliability. What more could you ask for a bit of Summer fun?
In Japan you got a choice of MX-5 20th models – the convertible or the tin-top. In Europe you just get the rag-top (based on the MX-5 1.8 SE) with a few extra features thrown in. You get chrome grill, door handles and headlight facia; silver-look fog surrounds; a new set of 17″ alloys and of course the required ’20th Anniversary’ badges.
Throw in a front suspension bracing bar for better handling, a choice of three colours – True Red, Crystal White Pearl or a new Aurora Blue – and extend the colour scheme to the painted bits on the interior and you have the whole Mazda MX-5 20th Anniversary package. Just 2,000 MX-5 20th are on offer.
As well as the MX-5 20th, Mazda will also be showing the new 2010 Mazda5, the 2010 Mazda6 Facelift and the Mazda SKY Engines and SKY-Drive Auto box (which we we saw at Tokyo last year) at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
