Mazda MX-5 GT Concept debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed
Tue, 26 Jun 2012A Mazda MX-5 GT with 205bhp is to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed to gauge customer reaction for a production GT.
We do tend to think that MINI are the masters of the limited edition model, but Mazda come close with special editions of the MX-5.
At Goodwood this week we’re going to be treated to the latest MX-5 special with the debut of the MX-5 GT, sporting 205 bhp from its naturally aspirated 2.0 litre.
MX-5 GT, we hear you ask? Surely, there’s already a Mazda MX-5 GT with 275bhp?
Well, yes, there is but it’s a track only MX-5 and is apparently the inspiration for this MX-5 GT Concept which, Mazda say, is appearing at Goodwood – and doing the hillclimb – to gauge reaction for a production model. We think we can already tell Mazda the reaction will be positive.
Yes, there’s something appealing about the MX-5′s modest power in stock form that allows you to have huge fun without ever really coming unstuck, but a limited edition MX5 with an extra 40 or so bhp, upgraded suspension, carbon fibre splitter, rear diffuser and a spoiler is very appealing.
So although the MX-5 GT Concept may be labelled a concept, it’s all but certain a production MX-5 GT is just round the corner.
