Mazda Motorsports names John Doonan director
Fri, 27 May 2011
Mazda North American Operations on Friday promoted John Doonan to director of Mazda Motorsports, effective immediately.
Doonan joined Mazda North American Operations in 2003 and worked in the company's advertising and marketing department. He became manager of motorsports team development before 2005.
Mazda Motorsports created the Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development ladder program and built relationships with Star Mazda and IndyCar during Doonan's time as manager of motorsports team development. Mazda also won the manufacturers' championship in the Grand-Am GT and World Challenge Touring Car series.
"John has played a key role in Mazda's growth and success in the motorsports arena and has been instrumental [in] expanding our strategic racing partnerships," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO. "This promotion should serve to underscore John's contribution to our overall business, as well as the importance motorsports plays in Mazda's corporate strategy."
Doonan takes over for Robert Davis, who oversaw the motorsports division during his time as senior vice president of research and development, customer service operations and quality, according to a spokesman for Mazda Motorsports. Davis became senior vice president of the newly formed U.S. Operations Group on May 1. He now oversees all U.S. sales operations and training, marketing, customer service and parts, owner loyalty, dealer development, public relations and dealer affairs.
In his new position, Doonan will be responsible for all Mazda Motorsports activity in North America and will report to Jay Amestoy, vice president of public affairs and motorsports.
