Mazda Tribute recalled for same fix as Ford Escape
Fri, 27 Jul 2012
Mazda is recalling 217,500 copies of the Tribute SUV--from the 2001 through 2008 model years--to fix a sticking throttle. The same problem prompted Ford to recall the mechanically similar Escape SUV on July 26.
Ford built the Tribute for Mazda, as well as the Escape. The recalled vehicles use the 3.0-liter V6 and have cruise control. If the driver pushes the throttle to the floor, a cruise-control cable that runs under the plastic engine cover can get stuck and hold the throttle open.
Ford's recall of the Escape covers nearly 424,000 vehicles from the 2001 to 2004 model years, including versions sold overseas with the Maverick name. Mazda's Tribute recall covers the 2001 to 2008 model years. Mazda did not sell a 2007-model-year Tribute.
To fix the problem, dealers will install new fasteners that increase the space between the engine and the plastic cover.
