McLaren MP4-12C gets the axe

Fri, 04 Apr 2014

Production of the McLaren 12C is dead. That's according to a letter sent by CEO Mike Flewitt to owners that read in part, “The final piece of news I wanted to share with you is regarding 12C production, which we have decided to cease in light of the success of 650S. The new car has been so well received since its unveiling at the Geneva motor show (we already have a six-month order bank), we will focus all our capacity at the McLaren Production Centre on 650S.”

This represents a turnaround for the company that just a few days ago said the 650S would slot between the 12C and P1 in the lineup, and that both would continue.

But, McLaren adds, “The benefits of such progress are not limited to our new models.” The company is offering a free technology upgrade for the 12C beginning in June.

The package includes new Active Aero software that will allow the airbrake to improve stability when lifting off the gas or cresting a hill, in addition to its current purpose of deploying during heavy braking. The new system also adds a drag reduction system that lowers the wing at high speeds in a straight line. The upgrade also improves the infotainment system, and the newer models will get external controls for lowering the windows.

McLaren 12C owners will also be offered discounted upgrades that come standard on the 650S like a backup camera and satellite radio.

This is a stand-up move for McLaren, offering these free upgrades. The company could have easily tried to sell current owners on the 650S or even upsell the P1. Instead, 12C owners feel taken care of, and they may even have a more limited edition than they originally thought. Owners can contact McLaren for more information.
