McLaren P1 GTR OFFICIALLY previewed – debuts at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

The McLaren P1 GTR (pictured) will debut at Pebble Beach 2014

We learnt last month that McLaren had decided to produce a P1 for the track – a la the Ferrari FXX programme – and in the process revive the GTR moniker from the iconic McLaren F1 GTR to create the new McLaren P1 GTR. Now McLaren are previewing the debut of the P1 GTR at next month’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with a  design sketch of the P1 GTR ahead of its real life reveal in California.

Following in the giant steps of the F1 GTR – and those of the road-going P1 – will be no easy task, but what’s on offer certainly offers lots of promise.

The GTR version of the P1 will get a much more aggressive aerodynamic pack than the road P1 with an enormous fixed rear wing atop a race spec diffuser – all of which will provide even more downforce than the road car – a pair of great big exhaust pipes sticking out the back and a big set of track alloys with slicks.

Power is also upped in the P1 GTR from the P1′s 903bhp combination of its 3.8 litre V8 and electric motor to an even more barking 986bhp which, coupled with lower weight and better aerodynamics, should see the P1 GTR able to get to 62mph in around 2.5 seconds.

Howe many P1 GTRs are going to be built we don’t know, but as the only people able to buy in to the GTR – and McLaren’s GTR race programme – are existing owners of the road P1, numbers will be small.

Which is just as well, as the P1 GTR, and GTR Programme, is going to cost £1.98 million.
