McLaren P1 continues development before Geneva auto show

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

As enthusiasts, we can't get enough of supercars. We really can't get enough. From spy photos to development mules, auto-show reveals to inevitable GT3 versions, we love this stuff. Last week the McLaren P1 rose to the roof of the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills for some interested buyers. Now we're getting a view of the development that's been happening since the car's reveal at the Paris auto show. McLaren posted this video to its Facebook account this morning.

According to McLaren, company engineers, technicians and drivers are running a fleet of prototypes codenamed XP on roads and road courses around the world. Collaborators include brake manufacturer Akebono, tire company Pirelli, with Mobil 1 on cooling, lubrication and hydraulic fluids. Rumor has it that there will be at least some aero tweaks before the final version hits the streets, hence the post-reveal camouflage.

Easter egg note: The squiggly lines on the camouflage are in the shapes of race tracks. How many can you spot?

The speculators are saying the McLaren P1 will produce 800 hp from an upgraded version of the MP4-12C's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8. More power could come from an F1-style KERS system for a total output of around 960 hp. In a street car. That anyone can buy. Provided they have the scratch, of course.

We'll find out more this spring at the Geneva auto show.
