Mecum auctions classic muscle cars in Florida

The action is over in Arizona but the Mecum auction in Kissimmee, Fla., is just heating up. Day one is done, with total sales passing $4 million. More than 70 percent of the lots that crossed the block were sold.
There are more than 2,100 bidders registered, with thousands more in attendance at Osceola Heritage Park. The auction featured the collection of Tommy Gibson, an American entrepreneur and collector.
Gibson's collection of muscle cars spans from the late 1950s to the 1980s. Lots include a 1966 Pontiac GTO 389 four-speed, a 1967 Chevrolet Nova and a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with 86 original miles.
The top seller of the day was a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner with a 426 Hemi. It crossed the block at $90,000. Other top sellers include a 1966 Corvette Coupe with a 427, air conditioning and power brakes that went for $54,000, and a 1956 Ford Thunderbird that was finished in buckskin tan hammered for $48,000.
Wednesday's action started with road art at 8:30 a.m., followed by vehicles at 9 a.m. Interesting lots include a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air, a 1951 GMC Pickup and a 1934 Plymouth Coupe with a 427 making 1,000 hp.
