Mercedes-Benz S-Class interior loaded with pioneering technology

Thu, 21 Mar 2013

The 2014 Mercedes S-Class' interior has been revealed ahead of its debut at next week's New York Auto Show.

The overall interior architecture is a clear evolution of the current car's, with a wave-form IP and a separate binnacle but, as you would expect from the latest generation of a car famous for its pioneering tech, it hosts a vast array of electronic innovations.

The all-digital gauge pack and 12.3-inch high-resolution center display features Splitview dual-display technology and the fifth-generation Comand system powered by an Intel Atom processor, controlled by a rotary dial. The system currently works with Apple's iOs operating system, while support for Android and Blackberry-based systems is in development.

Of course luxury is the S-Class' raison d'être and occupants are pampered by lashings of high-grade wood and leather covering seats that feature an energizing massage system. It's based on the hot stone principle and 14 air cushions in the backrest, plus heat, offer six total massage programs, two of which use the heating system. The seats also include active seat belts and a technology called Magic Body Control, which detects pot-holes and bumps and adjusts the suspension accordingly.

Its 'Active Perfuming System' – complete with an ionization function – provides four types of perfume: Freeside, Sports, Downtown and Nightlife, none of which sound particularly appealing. The S-Class also boasts a 1500-watt Burmester audio system with 24 speakers, creating a 3D sound effect.

Rear passengers are offered dual screens and individual reclining seats that also massage. A fresh backrest design gives 37° of recline – 43.5° on the rear passenger side.

The whole cabin features 156 buttons, according to Mercedes, with 12 on the steering wheel, 23 on the driver's door and another 13 on the passenger door. On the dashboard 19 buttons can be found along with four vent buttons, while the IP hosts a further three. Three rearview mirror buttons and 10 on the front headliner complete the front contingent. In the rear, 15 buttons are located on each side of the rear doors, with nine on the rear console along with a further two in the air vents. The rear headline is host to four, and even the drink holder console gets in on the act with three buttons.

Exterior-wise, we've already seen a preview of its new shape in the form of the 'Aesthetics S' sculpture, shown at last year's Paris motor show. Gorden Wagener said, "The characteristic lines of the S-Class have always represented the expression of automotive culture, as we understand it."

"The sculpture highlights the artistic aspects of design. With the design and proportions of ‘Aesthetics S', we are communicating a modern sense of status, sensual shapes and stylish sportiness," he added, contrary to most of our associating the S-Class with restrained, elegant surfacing.
