Mercedes F1 at Edinburgh’s Race the Runway
Fri, 22 Aug 2014The 2012 Mercedes F1 car will be at Edinburgh’s Race the Runway 2014 event
In 2013, Mercedes decided to cough up sponsorship to help the Race the Runway event at Edinburgh Airport, and it must have been a success as Mercedes are back again as event sponsors. The Race the Runway event is an opportunity for car owners to blat their cars down the runway at Edinburgh Airport and generate cash for a worthy cause – the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.
Participants have to cough up a £300 donation to the charity to get the chance to see what their car can do, for which they get a free lunch as well as the thrill of flat-out driving on the runway, and can even bring a passenger along.
Every participant is guaranteed two drives – a pre-qualifying and qualifying run – as this year’s participants try to beat last year’s record speed of 186mph, as fast as the take-off speed of Edinburgh Airports passenger planes which will still be running during the event.
There’s a fighting chance a Mercedes will take the gong for the quickest car as Mercedes are taking the 2012 Silver Arrow MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 W03 – driven by Michael Schumacher when it raced and by Anthony Davidson at the event – as well as an A45 AMG, GLA 45 AMG, C63 AMG Black Series, E63 AMG Estate S, SL63 AMG and the SLS AMG Black Series.
Rob Halloway, Mercedes Communications and Events director, said:
We’re delighted to be back at Race the Runway.
It’s great fun and a real privilege to thunder along the tarmac at take-off speeds in a car – and of course it’s all perfectly legal!
But best of all this remarkable day raises awareness and funds for a terrific cause – the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice. I’m certain that when Ant Davidson gets behind the wheel of the Formula One car it’ll be unlike anything seen before at Edinburgh Airport, and a real magic moment in the story of the Silver Arrows.
The Race the Runway event at Edinburgh Airport takes place on 4th September 2014.
